Binge-watching has become a popular way for people to enjoy television, especially during breaks when there is extra free time. Whether it’s watching one episode after another late at night, or finishing an entire season in one weekend, everyone has different reasons for getting hooked on a show. To better understand what makes a series truly “binge-worthy,” two viewers, Ka’Zaria Bell and Chelsie Thomas, shared their personal preferences, habits, and opinions on watching TV shows.
Ka’Zaria Bell spent her break binge-watching “King of the Hill”. She explains her opinion on what makes a show binge worthy by stating, “I think how enjoyable it is to the viewer is what determines if it’s binge worthy.”
She prefers shows with longer seasons, even though she admits she struggles with deciding what to watch next. While binge-watching, Ka’Zaria’s go-to snacks include “BBQ Pringles and Cran-Grape juice.”
She is more of a “finish the whole season” type of watcher, and enjoys how relatable and unintentionally funny the characters are. She rated King of the Hill an 8 out of 10 because “I can get why some people may find it boring, but I love it,” she stated.
Ka’Zaria doesn’t mind either watching these shows alone or with others, “as long as there isn’t too much talking,” she explains, and she usually watches whenever she has time. Social media also plays a role in influencing what she watches. She explained, “I’m always on TikTok or Snap, or honestly even asking my friends what they like to watch.”
When it comes to spoilers, Ka’Zaria is no fan. She says, “I cover my ears and walk away.” While there are many shows that are popular and categorized as “overrated”, Ka’Zaria admits that she was binged because the show was popular.
Like Ka’Zaria, Chelsie Thomas also binged this winter break. Chelsie watched the new season of “Stranger Things.” Her ideal binge-watching setup includes “watching it off my ipad. With a snack on the side, candle running, and also being all comfy and cozy in my bed,” she explains.
Chelsie is drawn to shows that are “either action-packed or romance,”, and she is also likely to watch something recommended by friends or family. As a busy person, she prefers shorter episodes, so she can stay focused and not get bored.
She often switches between shows while she’s binge watching because “sometimes one has more interest in me one day, the next, I have more interest in another,” she explains.
Chelsie believes characters are very important to a show, especially the main character, because their actions can affect how enjoyable the storyline is. She explains her reasoning for quitting or not continuing a show, stating, “When the show doesn’t follow through with the story. For example, when there are plot holes, it makes me feel upset and feel as if I don’t want to watch it anymore.”
Chelsie rated “Stranger Things” season five an 8 out of 10, explaining that while it was good, the storyline felt messy compared to other seasons, and different from what the show originally portrayed.
Overall, both viewers value strong characters, engaging storylines, and personal enjoyment when deciding whether a show is binge-worthy. While Ka’Zaria prefers longer seasons and relatable humor, and Chelsie focuses more on pacing and story consistency, both agree that a show must keep the viewer interested and feel worth their time. These responses highlight that binge-watching is more than just watching TV, it’s an experience shaped by comfort, storytelling, and personal connection.
