At the start of the year students are focused on establishing themselves, but now, in the second semester, students tend to diverge in their focus, depending on the year they are in, like their school work, drivers ed, college visits, and more.
Khadija Sakho, who will be graduating this year, says that a few activities she’s done this year include, showing her commitments to her community, and says that this year has taught her a lot of self discipline, and holding on to the fact that she is the only one she can hold herself accountable if she wants to accomplish anything. Malaysia Arrington, who is a sophomore, says that she is excited for the next grade level, and is ready to experience a junior level of education. As she gets closer to her Junior year, she is hoping to find new and better studying methods, and hopes she can dedicate and devote herself to her school work, especially because she worked really hard to get her grades up after she really struggled during first quarter.
Moving to the next grade is a pretty big deal for these two. One, who is going to become a freshman in college, and another, who is going to become a Junior in high school. Beginning to prepare for the next year of school, Malaysia says that for the next year, she is “looking forward to improving her grade and her gpa, as well as looking for colleges.” She also says, “Some things I would like to accomplish is to improve my skill set, start a school dance team, and most importantly, get into a good college.” Khadija also has a few that she is looking forward to with starting her freshman year in college. Khadija says, “Definitely finding my place in college and finding a good set of people to navigate through college with.” Before the end of this school year though, like Malaysia, Khadija is also hoping to keep her grades up, as well as bringing her best creativity.
Some people don’t have an idea on what they’re going to do when they graduate, especially when they are not at the point of looking for colleges yet, but Malaysia is set in stone on her future career. She says, “I have somewhat of a plan for after graduation. For right now, I am looking to take classes in the medical field to help me become a neurosurgeon.
Many people have specific people who have had a big impact on their high school lives, whether classmates, coworkers, family, or friends. Khadija Sakho is someone who has had many supportive people throughout high school. She says, “Definitely my friend, Travonna. She has shown me the kindest side, and has instilled in me that I deserve kindness and consideration.” Khadija also states, “My coworker Teresa definitely gave me good advice. She said, the people you should fight for will be there for you through thick and thin. If they can’t handle the thin, they’re gonna leave you in the thick.”
During Senior year, a large number of students experience something called “senioritis”. Khadija Sakho gives an explanation on what she thinks this is. She says, “It’s having this little feeling in the back of your head that you’re gonna miss a lot of things, but also wanting it to be over.”
As the school year drives to a close, both student,s Khadija and Malaysia are now focusing on their lives after high school. Khadija says, “Definitely knowing, from this point on, all of my decisions are in my hands, but it is also exciting figuring out the next step in my life.” Malaysia says, “I honestly don’t know how I feel about the school year ending, and being even closer to graduation, I’m not sure if I am ready for it, but time has flown by.”
Time has definitely flown by fast with these two. One is going off to college soon, and one is getting ready to prepare herself for the college search.
