At Rock Island High School, Rally at the Rock had become more than just an event to start off the year. From the excitement of activities and exploring clubs, to the opportunity of meeting new people, this event helps open the doors for students to get involved and feel connected in the RIHS community.
Mrs. Hayek, who has been helping at Rally at the Rock for many years, explained that this event, like many others, helps create a diverse and welcoming community. “It gives students an opportunity to check out RIHS organizations that they can join if interested. There’s more to RIHS than just athletics; it’s a diverse community with varied opportunities to get involved.” The event also helps focus on the students’ well-being, by supporting groups like The Gray Matters Collective. This organization helps teach students different ways to cope with mental health by also giving them a safe space to express themselves, and breaking down the stigma. “Mental health matters; everyone matters and is important,” said Mrs. Hayek.
Encouraging involvement is one of the missions at Rally at the Rock. Another club that helps educate people is the Culture Club, run by Mr. Mertel. “For the Culture Club, we encouraged students who would like to know more about cultures at Rocky, and want to share about theirs.” Mr. Mertel also runs a club called the “Flex Club”. This is a group that helps build students’ mental and physical health. “We talk to guys that are looking to stay active and want to build a strong community,” said Mr. Mertel.
Both staff members hope that students left Rally at the Rock with a feeling of belonging. “If they choose to get involved and meet other people, they are welcome in any number of groups. Doors, hearts, and minds are open,” said Mrs. Hayek. The impact of extracurricular involvement goes beyond fun, it affects student success. Being part of a club can help the students build a support system, make friends, and even gain more knowledge and interest in new activities. “I think it helps students have a stronger community and support system. It also gives them an additional reason to be here and take ownership in the school they attend,” said Mr. Mertel.
In the end, Rally at the Rock is about connection. It reminds students that they are not alone, that there is a place for everyone, and that when people work together, the possibilities are endless.
