This past summer, the Rock Island High School Spanish and Science Departments teamed up together for a trip to the Dominican Republic. The two departments joined forces for this trip due to the Spanish language in the Dominican Republic and the environmental factors, such as exploring caves. The point of the trip was “to expose students to the culture and language of the Dominican Republic, as well as experiencing ecotourism and learning history,” says Mrs. Nicole Regan, a Spanish teacher on the trip.
Activities on the trip consisted of city tours, ziplining, whitewater rafting, pottery classes, surfing lessons, snorkeling, cave exploring, etc. Of those activities, Regan says her favorites were “whitewater rafting and the boat tour in the mangroves.” Kaleigha Lemmon’s favorite part of the trip was “going to the beach and getting a good tan all day.” Going on a fun trip means getting some fun souvenirs! “I got tons of cultural art that I love and have around my room to remind me of the fun I had,” said Kaleigha.
The food also played a big role on the trip. “We got to eat at a family’s house that runs a restaurant from their kitchen. We ate in their front garden and their food was amazing. Best meal we had, by far,” said Regan.
Overall, the trip consisted of fun memories and learning experiences.
