With just one month into the school year, Rocky has undergone numerous changes. There’s a new principal and assistant principal, construction that has affected the routines of everyone, and even a whole new grade of students. But new students equals new ideas, and new ideas equal new experiences, and the Student Council is focused on taking advantage of these new opportunities.
Mrs. Jackson and Miss Munday, who have been the Student Council co-sponsors for three years now, are interested in creating something new for the new year. For example, according to Mrs. Jackson, “We are trying to move some of the [future] events to new locations, or even just trying to get more students involved right now. We are also always looking for new things with the Student Hunger Drive and Dance Marathon.” As an example of new locations for events, this year, the Student Council has decided to “move the Homecoming assembly back inside in the fieldhouse. This is where it was when Miss Munday and I [Mrs. Jackson] were in school, and we are excited to have it back.”
“Though newcomers might not realize it yet, the Student Council is in a place of power,” claims Miss Munday. They have control over details like locations, decorations for Homecoming, theme days, and even the creation of new events. Many would be surprised by how much of the social events the Student Council has made up themselves. “Events such as the Powderpuff Game, boo bags, crush for crush, and more were made from scratch by the students,” states Munday. It is possible to introduce something new to Rocky. However, “There is a lot the Student Council deals with right now, so if they want a new event, we would like it if the students would lead it,” notes Munday.
But overall, Munday and Jackson have a positive feeling about this year, though feeling excited for the new ideas the students will bring, one thing they are looking forward to the most is the students’ follow-through. “I want them to be able to say they did something,” Munday mentions. “We hope we can get more participation so that the community of the school stays exciting,” expresses Jackson.
The Student Council isn’t just about the events and decisions, it’s about the bonding, the teamwork, and the persistence. The Student Council builds new friendships, as they are the puppeteers to your favorite experiences, and the backbone of the Rock Island High School community.
