As the 2025 softball season approaches, the sophomore players are preparing to take on bigger roles than they did last year. The previous season focused on getting comfortable with the team, growth, and building bonds of trust. When looking ahead to this upcoming season, their roles will become bigger, as they learn the ropes of Varsity from the seniors who will be gone next year.
Maddie Franks and Ella Dejonghe are two players among the very talented Class of 2027 that have proven that they can hang with the seniors this upcoming season. Last season, both players made a strong impact on the field, balancing time between Varsity and Junior Varsity. Both players made a big impact when it came to the Rocks advancing to the Regional Title game.
Reflecting on last season, Dejonghe shared a key lesson she learned that she will carry into the upcoming season, stating, “Everyone makes mistakes, and your teammates have your back.” Franks echoed the importance of adapting to the higher level of play, explaining, “The game runs faster, and it is more competitive compared to the JV level.”
Working off last season’s accomplishments, both players have utilized the offseason by training during the winter months. Dejonghe has used her travel softball experience to stay sharp, working on both her confidence and hitting. “I’ve been focusing on building my confidence and improving my hitting,” she explained. Franks has also been putting in extra effort, emphasizing strength and endurance, stating, “This year, I’m working more on strength and endurance. I’m also getting in a lot more reps compared to last year, when I didn’t have much of an offseason due to playing basketball in the winter.”
As the season approaches, building strong team chemistry is just as important. Having gained the experience they did last year, both Franks and Dejonghe understand the importance of team bonds. “Team chemistry played a huge role in my development last year,” Franks said. “The team made me feel comfortable, which allowed me to relax and play to my full potential.”
Maddie Franks and Ella Dejonghe have both proven themselves as key leaders, building on last year’s achievements to elevate the team even further. As the team looks to continue its upward trajectory, Maddie and Ella’s growth will undoubtedly set the tone for the season. With their leadership, the future of the program looks brighter than ever.
