Rock Island High Schools Student Council doesn’t limit themselves just to school events, they work to better the community, as a whole. Lizzie Shorten is a senior at Rocky, and has been a part of StuCo for two years. Isaiah Tubbs, is a teacher at Rocky, and has been an advisor of StuCo for two years. Some of the main events they cover are Rally at the Rock, Hunger Drive, Homecoming, Dance Marathon, and many other school-led events.
Dance Marathon is a particularly special event, as it’s a student-led organization that helps raise money and awareness for sick and injured kids. To Shorten, “Dance Marathon is a good cause because we’re raising money for kids who need it more than we do.” Similarly, Dance Marathon, to Tubbs, “Is a real opportunity for us to make a difference for kids in our community. It allows us to show that giving back is an important part of life, and it demonstrates how anybody can make a real impact on other’s lives.” Dance Marathon is an important event that everyone wants to be a part of.
This year is already going better than last year. Mr. Tubbs said, “I have learned to always reach out, the worst people can say is no. I also have learned that sometimes simple is better for certain ideas. We started the planning process much earlier, and we are hosting the event before the two week spring break, so we don’t lose any momentum.” This year’s StuCo is putting their best foot forward to make the biggest difference.
Speaking for the group, Shorten said, “To be more successful this year, we are trying to find more ways to raise money in Rock Island, such as having different restaurants sponsor us.” The promotion doesn’t stop there. Shorten also said, “To help advertise Dance Marathon, I am reposting anything that is posted on the Student Council instagram.” While Dance Marathon is a group effort, everyone has to do their part on their own for it to benefit the group, as a whole.
Mr. Tubbs mentioned, “This year’s goal is $6,000, and last year we raised a little over $5,000.” Shorten is in agreement with Tubbs’ statement, as she said, “I expect to raise this year, hopefully, more than last year, so probably around 6k-7k.”
Everyone can make a difference for the Dance Marathon. It’s not limited to those involved in StuCo. To help Rock Island High School hit their goal, donate at https://events.dancemarathon.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=donate.event&eventID=6619 . Any amount is appreciated.
