Special thanks to the work of Rock Island High Schools (Rocky) 2023-2024 Theater Board, the members last year gave a very full year of activities, meetings, and bringing community to what is Rocky’s Theater Department. But it is time to switch it up for the new year! Theater Board, shortened to “Board” consists of 4 students, who were voted in, to help run Rocky’s Theater Club along with Mrs. Foster. Again, special thanks to the 2023-2024 board members; Thom Elliott, Nyx King, Angelina (Nj) Nocentelli, and Zee Phares! But it came time last year to vote in a new set of four members, with now the 24-25 board having two new and two returning members. For the 24-25 Board, left in the leadership of Thom Elliott (12), Yessenia Leos-Ochoa (12), Adrian Mills (11), and Zee Phares (12)!
As Elliott explains, Board elections can be a very lengthy process, stating, “First, you announce that you want to run for board. Then, people write on a sheet of paper basically who their “ideal” board would be. The people who got written down the most go on the final ballot. And, the 4 people with the most votes are finally selected to be the members for next year’s board!”
Even though it can be a very repetitive process for returning members, emotions run high, ideas start flowing, anticipation sets in, and that seems like something that’ll never change. Phares explains just how it really feels, stating, “I’m excited about the new members just because that means new ideas and input. I’m also just really excited for musical reveal and the 24 hour show because it’s always fun!”
With a new year with new members, there are plenty of days in the theater season for events, activities, and overall just fun and engaging possibilities that can not only bring Board closer together, but the students that are a part of the department as a whole. Mills states that he is not just excited for anything specific, but just to be a part of something bigger for both the tech programs sake and for the department’s sake, as well. “I’m excited to be a part of bigger things in the club and theater. I want to help out in as many areas as I possibly can,” Mills states.
Either way, the department and the participating students along with it, are very excited to see what the new selected Board, along with the department’s director, have in store for the 24-25 school year. Break all of the legs, guys!
