Going from coaching basketball to coaching tennis, as well, is a big change, but if anyone can do it, Coach Maggi Voss can. The girls tennis team had a big change this year by getting a new head coach for their team. Coach Maggi Voss stepped up to the “court” for the team, and is starting her journey as a tennis coach. Voss states that, “Coaching tennis is a dream that I didn’t know I had.”
The team and Coach Voss both have been adjusting to the new ways that have come with having a new coach. “I like that the new coaching allows for a bit more freedom, because she’s asking for a bit more freedom, because she’s asking for preferences and what works for us,” Junior, Averi Vroman says. Having a new coach could cause the team dynamic to get off to a rocky start, but the team adapted to the new system very well. The team has a new sense of closeness, and everyone is bonding with each other in such a positive way.
Voss says that the biggest difference between basketball and tennis is “the sport itself,” and how tennis is definitely more of an individual sport than basketball is definitely more of a team sport. Even with going from coaching more of a team sport to going to coaching an individual sport, Voss made the individual sport seem so much more like a team sport with the way she’s brought the girls together and created a bond between the girls. She has done this by including all the girls in activities, and not separating JV and Varsity at practice. Averi Vroman goes on to state that “the team feels so much more like a team this year compared to years in the past.” Vroman also says that the team feels so much closer in dynamic, and that they break out at the end of practice every day and before every game and that has helped the bond, as well.
Coach Voss says that even after the season she wants all 23 girls to have learned something and to have fun and that she wants to continue the bonding and great relationship with all the girls even after season is over. Though it might have been a nervous and rough start, Coach Maggi Voss has done an amazing job with the team, so far. As the team says 1…2…3 ROCKS…4…5…6…FAMILY!
