Every reader has that one book they couldn’t put down, that one book that stuck more than any other, a favorite book that they suggest to everyone and anyone.
Sophomore Daniella Leahy goes into explaining her favorite book, Beach Read by Emily Henry. “This book is about two academic rivals, who place a bet with each other to write in the opposite genre of each other. The guy writes dark sad books, while the girl writes romance happy endings, and we are taken along by their cute love story,¨ she explains. In contrast, Isaac Perez, also a sophomore, said her favorite book is Regretting You by Colleen Hoover. “This story starts with a girl and a guy who were married, but her husband soon died. The book continues to follow Morgan, who experiences lots of loss. While she’s dealing with this grief, she discovers some of the worst news, her husband and sister had an affair. Morgan faces love and loss, as she slowly heals and falls for someone new,” Perez stated.
Just from hearing them both give a summary of these two books, they are obviously very different, leading to the reasons on why they each liked the books they read. Daniella goes on explaining, ¨I loved reading this book because it was unlike any other story I’ve read, and was just a really cute and sweet story.¨ Whereas Isaacs states, “At times, it got really dark and sad. There were some major plot twists though that never failed to take me by surprise.”
The impact left by a book is a thing that will be different for everyone. Daniella states, “This book left an impact on me because it showed me that opposites do attract, and that you should never judge a book by its cover because even if you have a strong opinion on something, if you try new things, the results will always surprise you.” This book continued to show Daniella a common theme of feeling “Refreshing, charming, heartfelt.” Daniella’s book also gave her nostalgic emotion. She explained, “I felt nostalgic because a lot of the setting was based on past memories, and that bittersweetness when growing up, and that constant theme of self discovery.” Isaac Perez shows she was impacted by the book, stating, “I find it impactful toward me because the family tree in this story was huge, and so is mine. I also found it relatable at times because of the topic grief.” But even with that constant topic of grief, Isaac Perez still managed to find delight in this book. “I felt joy when reading this. When the book starts with such heavy devastating tragedies, and we get to see that these characters can overcome it, and find the good in it, and turn over a new leaf.”
Isaac Perez liked the author’s goal and message in this book. She states, “The message that spoke to me was you can always find a good situation out of a really bad situation. My opinion did change because when I started reading it, I thought to myself, wow this book is heartbreaking, now it’s gonna be heartbreaking at the end, but in the end, it was a really happy and joyful story.” Ella has a different opinion, stating, “My opinion when reading the book had no change. From the beginning, I saw the characters’ morals and that stuck through the whole read. I wouldn’t change anything about this book, the build up was great, the characters’ tension was there, and I knew it was a good book when I didn’t want to put it down.” Ella felt strongly about her book. She said, “The reason this is my favorite book I’ve read is the realness of it, and how it stuck out to me. It was a cute love story like other books I’ve read, but it stuck out due to the plot being different to anything else I’ve read.”
